DOI opposes new reservation water bill

THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2002 A Senate subcommittee on Wednesday held a hearing on a bill to build a water system affecting the Rocky Boy's Reservation and other communities in Montana. The Chippewa-Cree Tribe believes the project will help the reservation economy. Vice chairman Bruce Sunchild Sr. testified. Bureau of Reclamation commissioner John Keys, however, said the bill is inconsistent with the tribe's recent water settlement. He said an additional $120 million for the reservation and $60 million for area communities is needed. Get the Story:
