Neb. amendment allows tribal gaming

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2002

Nebraska State Sen. DiAnna Schimek introduced a constitutional amendment on Thursday to allow Indian gaming.

The effort marks yet another attempt by Schimek to make Class III, or casino-style, gaming legal. But this time, she and supporters hope to capitalize a changing political and economic landscape, including a reconsideration by the Democrat party to support gaming and budget woes facing the state.

The amendment would allow Class III gaming on Nebraska's three reservations plus an additional one for Ponca Tribe trust lands. Or tribes could opt to open up to five casinos near the borders of states, like South Dakota and Iowa, that allow gaming.
