Indian lawmakers make up a quarter of the seats in Bolivia's new Congress, a first in history.

Indians make up 60 percent of the country but have been sidelined politically for years. Recently, activists and tribal leaders have pushed the battle for Indian rights to the mainstream.

Indian voting power became evident when Evo Morales, an Aymara leader, nearly wrested control of the country in a race against former president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, who was eventually picked during a Congressional run-off.
