An Alaska Native corporation has come under fire for its views on fish culverts.

Afognak Native Corp. told the state that it doesn't need a permit to place culverts on streams that may contain trout, grayling, Dolly Varden and other species. The corporation believes it only needs a permit when salmon are involved.

But the state says the corporation has to follow the law and request approval. Biologists believe the culverts hurt fish.

The corporation, along with a consortium of Native-owned timber companies, says business will suffer if state approval is required for every culvert.
