The American Indian Community House in Manhattan isn't big enough to handle the city with the largest number of American Indians and Alaska Native, community members say.

The center, formed in 1969, provides services to about 6,000 people a year. The city's Native population, in contrast, is 41,289, according to the 2000 Census.

When those who claim some Native ancestry is included, the count is 87,241.
