Okla. tribe taking part in protest

THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2002 The Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma is protesting what is being called inaction against a chemical plant that is leaking potentially dangerous materials on tribal land. The tribe, labor unions and the Indigenous Environmental Network say the state is ignoring contamination at the Continental Carbon plant in Ponca City. The groups are picketing today. The state admits that a black liquid substance is leaking from the ground near the plant. But it denies the material is dangerous. Tests done by a consultant for one of the labor unions said traces of a cancer-causing substance were detected. Get the Story:
