The State Department on Thursday said the spraying of coca crops in Colombia would not harm people or the environment.

The U.S. is set to pay $17 million to fumigate 300,000 acres of coca, the plant used to make cocaine. Much of the land sprayed is owned by Indian farmers.

Environmental groups and Indian leaders say the herbicide used is dangerous.
