Catawba chief picked in disputed election

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2002 A dissident group of Cawtaba tribal members elected new leaders on Saturday. Bill Harris was chosen chief of the South Carolina tribe. He will try to go to work today but the current leaders say the election was illegitimate. The current leaders have been in power since the tribe was federally recognized by Congress in 1993.
