Norton says No to Alaska pipeline council

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2002 During a roundtable discussion with regional reporters on Tuesday, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton dismissed a proposal for citizens to oversee the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Norton as saying: "What I've heard from the Interior (Department) people in Alaska is that the new proposal duplicates some of things we're already doing with public input. They feel that working through the existing processes would be better than creating a new process." Alaska Natives, some land owners and environmental group have called for better studies on the pipeline. Norton has proposed extending rights-of-way for another 30 years. Get the Story:
