Republican National Committee Chairman Marc Racicot disputed claims that the federal recognition process is influenced by political contributions.

Racicot told The Norwich Bulletin in an exclusive interview that people are mixing recognition with Indian gaming. "Is the question really about the federal recognition process or is about gambling?" he said. "And frankly, I think people should address those questions honestly."

He further stated that his experience with federal recognition has not been mired in "irregularities and improprieties" as officials and politicians in Connecticut allege. As former governor and former attorney general of Montana, he said the "process is clear, plain and steep in integrity."

Montana's Little Shell Chippewa Tribe is awaiting federal recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
