MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2002 Sharon Clahchischilliage is running for New Mexico secretary of state and if elected, she'll be the only Native American woman in the nation to hold a statewide office. But Clahchischilliage is unique in more ways than one. Not only is she a member of the Navajo Nation, she's also a Republican, running against a Hispanic woman in a Democrat-leaning state. "I'm surprised she's a Republican," Gary C. Anderson, a history professor at the University of Oklahoma, told The Washington Times. "She's running for a party that stole a huge amount of land from Indians in New Mexico." Get the Story:
