Indians lack political representation

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2002

Brazil's Indian population makes up the majority in some parts of the country but there are no elected indigenous representatives.

There was one Native lawmaker, the first in Brazil's history. But he died in July.

Brazil recognizes numerous Indian tribes and their land. There aren't any policies of self-determination or self-governance comparable to those in the U.S.

A result of the lack of political power is loss of land. Outside companies and ranchers often encroach on Indian reserves.
