The University of Minnesota regents plan to vote on the school's participation in a controversial telescope project located on sacred land in Arizona.

Apache, Hopi, Navajo and other tribes oppose the Mt. Graham observatory. They have asked various schools and lead sponsor University of Arizona not to erect telescopes on the land, which is considered sacred and is home to numerous species.

After meeting with Apache representatives, U-Minn's vice president for institutional relations is recommending the school participate. A vote is set for October.

There are already two telescopes at Mt. Graham. A third $90 million one is planned.
