Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) has introduced legislation to grant permanent U.S. residency to a Mexican national who entered the country illegally.

Jesus Apodaca is an 18-year-old honor student. Fellow Coloradan and GOP lawmaker Rep. Tom Tancredo wants him deported.

"This kid is an American, for crying out loud - he just doesn't have his citizenship," Campbell told The Denver Post.

"Tancredo has been hailed as a hero for upholding the law to its last letter, and as a hypocrite for having two illegal immigrants on a crew that remodeled his basement," columnist Jim Armstrong writes.
