Torricelli bows out of Senate race

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2002 Senator Robert Torricelli (D-New Jersey) ended his re-election bid on Monday. Torricelli said he didn't want to be responsible for losing the Democrat's single seat majority in the Senate. State party leaders are scrambling to find a replacement, but Republicans plan to challenge the late addition to the ballot. Torricelli was the subject of a probe into gifts his campaign received. He was never indicted but a contributor was sent to jail. Torricelli often opposed Indian gaming and was allied with opponents of tribal casinos. Get the Story:
