Duo honored for promoting tribal culture

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002 The Ford Foundation on Tuesday honored two Arizona men for promoting Tohono O'odham culture and health. Terrol Dew Johnson and Tristan Reader founded the Tohono O’odham Community Action in 1996. Their goal was to promote culture, leadership and health. The Ford Foundation is recognizing the pair specifically for a project that revives farming of traditional foods in hopes of combatting diabetes. TOCA will be awarded a $130,000 grant to carry out its work. Johnson, who is a tribal member, and Reader, who is not, were two of 20 honorees nationwide. Get the Story:
