New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone sought but eventually turned down a chance to replace Senator Robert Torricelli on the upcoming ballot for U.S. Senate, The Washington Post reports.

Pallone sits on the House Resources Committee and is a vocal member on Indian issues. His wife wanted him to keep his seat rather than run for Senate, according to The Post.

Democrats eventually selected former Senator Frank R. Lautenberg to run opposite Republican Douglas R. Forrester. Torricelli dropped out of the race on Monday amid questions over his ethical behavior and acceptance of campaign gifts.
