FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2002

The Return to Your Roots conference on Indian diabetes began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday.

Organizers focus on a return to a more traditional diet to combat the epidemic disease. Bison meat, green vegetables, fruits and nuts were staples before the 1930s, when diabetes began to show up in Indian Country.

In Oklahoma, about 20 percent of Natives suffer from diabetes.
