WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2002

Oglala Lakota President John Yellowbird Steele called for the state of Nebraska to enact a five-mile zone where the sale of liquor is prohibited.

At a state legislative hearing, Steele said the buffer zone will deter tribal members from making the five-mile journey from the Pine Ridge Reservation to Whiteclay. Alcohol is banned on tribal lands and Whiteclay is the closest border town.

"I don't think you're going to find these people walking five miles," Steele said, according to the Associated Press. "Whiteclay is the problem."
