Nez Perce revives historic horse breed

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2002 The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho has established a new breed of the Appaloosa horse. The tribe mixed western Appaloosa mares with horses from central Asia. The result was the Nez Perce Appaloosa, a breed that has now been registered. The original Appaloosa was bred to perfection by the tribe during the 1700s. After the Nez Perce War of 1877, the U.S. Army took away all of the tribe's horses. Get the Story:
