Five Nations land bill derailed

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2002

A bill to reform the way land owned by members of Oklahoma's Five Civilized Nations is managed has been shelved for the rest of the year.

After holding it up at the last-minute, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) doesn't have time to finish work on the bill, The Daily Oklahoman reported. He objected because the oil and gas industry raised problems.

The Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association alleges that the bill will make it harder to exploit Indian land. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, a state agency, also objected.
