State official quits at Indian meeting

MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2002 The Utah official in charge of student testing quit during a meeting with Indian education leaders. Barbara Lawrence said her job stressed her out too much. She cited competing directives from the state Legislature and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Lawrence was trying to explain the testing requirements at the meeting when she was hit with a barrage of questions about the state's efforts to educate Indian children, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
