A South Carolina judge heard oral arguments on Monday in a suit claiming the Catawba Nation owes $900,000 to a school district.

The Rock Hill School District says the tribe owes $1,400 a year for every student who lives on the Catawba Reservation. The district cites the 1993 law that settled the tribe's land claim in exchange for federal recognition, a restored reservation and $50 million.

The tribe disputes the payment and says it is unconstitutional.
