The Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts has been forced to sell off property, close tribal businesses and liquidate $1.2 million of stock, The Vineyard Gazette reports.

The tribe, which gained federal recognition in 1987, saw a $450,000 deficit in 2002. A shellfish venture alone is projected to lose $240,000, according to a letter cited by the paper.
