DOI gets an 'F' on computer security

The Department of Interior received the lowest grade possible in a Congressional review of information technology security.

But DOI wasn't alone in its "F" rating. Thirteen other federal agencies scored at the bottom of the pile.

Even at the top, things didn't look so good. The Social Security Administration had the best grade with a B-minus.

The Interior's Indian trust systems are woefully inadequate, a court investigator concluded last fall. The report led to the shutdown of all computer systems.

Since then, most of the department is back online. But the 6 percent that remain disconnected are the ones housing billions of dollars in financial data for individual Indians and tribes.

Yesterday's report card was issued by the House Government Reform subcommittee on government efficiency.
