THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2002 The Department of Energy awarded a $3 million grant to scientists whose goal is to create a new living organism. Dr. J. Craig Venter of the Institute for Genomic Research and Nobel laureate Hamilton O. Smith are running the project. They are using earlier work that indicated a single-cell organism can begin with a small number of genes. The scientists say the cell won't harm humans and will be designed to die if it enters the environment. Get the Story:
