WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002

The state of Minnesota and eight Ojibwe bands have reached a deal affecting tribal fishing rights.

The state and the tribes agreed to a walleye management plan for Lake Mille Lacs. It eases restrictions on non-Indian fishing after the non-Indian catch went over the accepted limit this past summer.

The total allowable catch is 400,000 pounds. The tribal take will be 100,000 pounds.

Ojibwe off-reservation fishing rights were affirmed in a narrow 1999 Supreme Court decision.
