Editorial: The truth about Sand Creek

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2002

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader in an editorial today welcomes the correction of a plaque at the Colorado State Capitol that properly refers to the November 29, 1864, massacre at Sand Creek.

But the paper says more needs to be done to educate people about what really happened to Indians during the Civil War. "We still need the truth to be told in our schools," the paper quotes Cheyenne-Arapaho chairman Robert Tabor as saying.

The plaque was changed at a ceremony last week. For years, it referred to the massacre of more than 150 elders and children by Army forces as a "battle."
