American Indians suffer from high rates of diabetes and other problems because the federal government hasn't lived up to its promises, The Arizona Republic says in an editorial.

"These people are suffering because of what our government has failed to do," the paper writes. "It's time to change that. It's time to fully address their needs."

The paper just concluded a four-part series on Native health. The stories "paint a damning picture of a nation's callousness toward its first residents," the editorial says.

The series dwelt primary on diabetes and in particular, the extremely high rate affecting Pimas in the state. Nearly half of Pima adults are afflicted with the disease, which can lead to amputations, kidney failure, blindness and a host of other conditions.
