Minnesota regulators on Thursday approved a hydroelectric power deal over the objections of the Pimicikamak Cree First Nation of Canada.

The tribe wanted a full hearing before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to address their concerns. Hydropower projects in Manitoba have destroyed tribal culture and lands.

The deal allows Xcel Energy Corp. to purchase $1 billion in electricity from Manitoba Hydropower, a Canadian company.
