Murkowski picks daughter for seat

MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2002 The wait is over! But Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski didn't have to look far to find his replacement in the Senate: he chose his daughter Lisa, a state lawmaker. Murkowski had the right to choose his successor under a state law passed to benefit him. He said he had a list of more than 20 candidates but announced on Friday that Lisa Murkowski would become the latest addition to the Senate. The decision brought a mixed reaction, including the usual charges of nepotism. The Wall Street Journal in an editorial today said Murkowski stooped to a new "political low." The paper writes: "In an Alaskan Senate delegation that hasn't changed in 22 years, Mr. Murkowski's choice smacks more of trying to establish a family dynasty than serving the taxpayers of either Alaska or the U.S." Get the Story:
