Tribal members sue to stop loan payment

MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 2003 Members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota are suing the Department of Interior to oppose a $31.8 million loan tribal leaders have taken out. The tribal members, a group known as Lakes of the Brave Inc., allege widespread fiscal management. They want a federal judge to halt payment of the loan, which tribal leaders say will consolidate debt. Lakes of the Brave is also asking Congress to put the tribal government into receivership for six years to sort out the tribe's money problems. The suit names Secretary Gale Norton and Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles as federal defendants. Get the Story:
