Navajo Nation signs gaming compact

MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 2003

The Navajo Nation signed a gaming agreement with the state of Arizona on Friday.

The tribe, the largest in the nation, doesn't plan on opening a casino soon but the deal leaves the door open for that possibility. The tribe's main goal is to lease its share of gaming devices to other tribes and benefit from gaming, which is opposed by traditional Navajo members.

The tribe can lease up to 1,400 machines to other tribes, leaving 1,000 for its own use.
