Representative J.D. Hayworth (R-Arizona) might give up his seat on the House Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over Indian issues, The Arizona Republic reports.

Hayworth told the paper he'd step aside if he gets a seat on the new Homeland Security Committee. That would leave room for freshman Rep. Rick Renzi, whose district includes parts of the Navajo Nation, to be his replacement on Resources, which only has two open seats.

Hayworth is the co-chairman of the Congressional Native American Caucus. He fought attempts to limit a trust fund accounting and to create an Indian gaming commission but defended Secretary of Interior Gale Norton when she was held in contempt last September.
