WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2003

President Bush on Tuesday renominated 30 candidates for the federal bench, including a close friend of ousted Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Mississippi).

Charles Pickering, currently a federal judge in Mississippi, is Bush's pick for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Under Democrat control, his nomination was defeated in the Senate Judiciary Committee over concerns of his civil rights record, the same reason Lott was forced to step down as leader.

Also renominated for the 5th Circuit was Patricia Owens. She had been defeated for her views on abortion and labor rights.

The 5th Circuit has been negative to tribal rights in recent years, ruling against Texas and Louisiana tribes in gaming, sovereign immunity and other issues. The Tigua and Alabama-Coushatta tribes of Texas were forced to close their casinos by the court.

The 29 other candidates were also those whose nominations were stalled or defeated in the Senate.
