Congress to seek settlement of Pueblo claim

THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2003

New Mexico's Congressional delegation is making another attempt to settle Sandia Pueblo's claim to the Sandia Mountains.

Rep. Heather Wilson (R) introduced legislation, identical to one passed by the Senate last year, on Monday to resolve the dispute. New Mexico's Senators plan to follow up in their chamber.

The tribe, federal agencies, local governments and private landowners have come to an agreement about 10,000 acres in the mountains. The land will remain under federal control but tribal members will have hunting and fishing rights and retain criminal and civil jurisdiction over Indians.
