TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2003

The Bush administration will submit a Supreme Court brief in support of white students challenging affirmative action, The Washington Times reports.

President Bush has been deeply involved in the debate over the issue, according to news accounts. Republicans have called on him to support the students while Democrats want him to back the policy.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said yesterday that Bush is "listening to both sides" of the issue but The Times says the Department of Justice will submit a brief no later than Thursday opposing the use of race in college admissions.

The case involves three white students who were denied entry to the University of Michigan.
