TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2003 The Bureau of Indian Affairs does not owe the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska $500,000 in back rent, a government official told Indian Country Today. The BIA admitted it paid last year's $62,000 rent late but that it owes nothing more. John Blackhawk, the chairman of the tribe, disputes that claim and says he has been trying to negotiate with BIA officials for months. The tribe has been leasing office space to the BIA for more than 20 years. Blackhawk says the BIA is getting a good rate and won't negotiate a new contract for less than $100,000. The Winnebago Tribe's economic development corporation, Ho-Chunk Inc., owns Indianz.com and AllNative.com. Get the Story:
