Editorial: Navajo Nation needs to reach out

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2003 The Farmington Daily-Times in an editorial calls on the new Navajo Nation administration to work with other governments and private industry in order to improve economic opportunities. President Joe Shirley and Vice President Frank Dayish Jr. have made economic development a priority. The paper says for this to become a reality, the tribe needs to "overcome including a Byzantine bureaucracy, a stagnant or non-existent economy and a staggering level of unemployment." Additionally, the paper says the tribe can achieve "a greater degree of true sovereignty and autonomy" by forging alliances with governments and the industry. Get the Story:
