TUESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2003

The new president of the Navajo Nation is putting a priority on education and economic development.

Joe Shirley Jr. was sworn in last week. His pledged are drawing support from politicians and other officials, who said they wanted to help advance learning and economic opportunities for the nation's largest tribe.

Some Navajo leaders are already putting those ideas to work. Officials of the Nageezi Chapter government are proposing some land use changes in hopes of encouraging business development.
