BIA tangles said to inhibit economic development

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2003 Entrepreneurs on the Navajo Nation have to go through a lengthy bureaucratic process to get their business leases approved. Some of it is tribal bureaucracy. Leases can be approved by local governments but only if those governments have certain autonomous powers. Otherwise, it goes to Navajo Nation council committee and a regional development office. After that, the Navajo Department of Justice and the Navajo president have to sign off. Then it gets sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where business owners say it can languish. Get the Story:
