MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003

Inupiaq villages on Alaska's northern coast are getting together today for Kivgiq, a midwinter celebration of dancing, storytelling, games and feasting.

Kivgiq began when Eagle Mother's son taught the Inupiaq how to build a large gathering house, make drums, and create songs and dances. Long a tradition in the villages, it was revived in the late 1980s.

About 700 dancers from Alaska, Canada and possibly Canada are expected for the three-day feast.
