The Bureau of Indian Affairs on Saturday took over the police department of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana.

The takeover was prompted by poor reviews of the tribe's police force, which was operated under a self-determination contract. A reported 37 officers, dispatchers and other staff were out of job.

Residents of Browning, a reservation town, welcomed the move. They said the department was plagued with corruption.
