Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina) introduced a bill last week to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Dole visited Lumbee country yesterday to explain her support. She says recognition is long overdue and will spur economic development in the region.

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) plans to introduce the House version of the bill. Dole's bill, S.420, is being referred to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
