Vote delayed on Idaho tribal tax proposal

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2003

Representatives of Idaho's five tribes testified against a proposal to impose a state cigarette tax on reservation sales.

A group of tobacco retailers retailers is behind the bill, which they say will eliminate an unfair advantage held by the tribes. The tribes said it would destroy their economies.

An attempt to kill the bill in a House committee failed but the committee decided to wait before voting. A study, requested by the tribes, will be conducted.
