"R. Carlos Nakai uses music to make magic. The Native American flutist transforms musical notes on a page into strong images and emotions that sing on the air.

Those artistic talents shone in James DeMars' striking "Two World Concerto," the highlight of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra's performance Saturday evening in Atwood Concert Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2, the "Pathetique," was equally as evocative. American composer George Whitefield Chadwick's lively "Jubilee" from his Symphonic Sketches rounded out the program with its own musical imagery.

DeMars composed the "Two World Concerto" to showcase Nakai's virtuosity on the Native American flute. The work was a blend of European-based classical music and the ancient sounds of the cedar flute. What resulted was a concerto that flowed easily from structure to impressionistic freedom."
