Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld reportedly characterized plans to store up to 44,000 tons of nuclear waste on a reservation in Utah as "stupid."

The Salt Lake Tribune cites a briefing Rumsfeld received on the controversial project last year. Because it is located near an Air Force based used for testing, he reportedly said: "Who would be stupid enough to do that?"

Eight private utility companies, known as Private Fuel Storage (PFS), signed an agreement with the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe to store the waste on the reservation.
