Republicans in the Senate say they are within one vote of approving drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, according to news accounts.

A GOP e-mail that allegedly originated with drilling proponent Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Majority Leader Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) says Vice President Dick Cheney is trying to woo the final vote. GOP and Democratic leaders say four senators, two from each party, are on the fence and are being heavily lobbied.

The House Resources Committee is holding a hearing today on a bill to open up ANWR to development. Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and is Tara Sweeney, an Inupiat Eskimo who works for Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski (R), are on the witness list.

The hearing begins at 10 a.m. and can be heard on the Internet at http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/audio.htm.
