Hearing to address expansion of waste facility

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2003 The Minnesota Legislature will hold a hearing today to consider the expansion of a nuclear waste facility near the Prairie Island Indian Community. Xcel Energy operates the nuclear plant and originally promised to limit storage of highly radioactive material. But the company is asking for permission to increase its capacity, a move opposed by the tribe. Xcel Energy is part of a consortium of companies that want to store their waste on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah. The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board dealt the consortium a setback that will delay the project for months and could ultimately stop it for good. Get the Story:
