THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2003 The House Resources Committee on Wednesday held a hearing on a bill that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling. As usual, it brought out the best in folks. There was some yelling and jousting among Republicans and Democrats. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), said at the very least, that Alaska Natives should be allowed to develop land they own in the refuge. "The forked tongue of the white man is at work again," Young said, according to The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "To do this to the Native people up there is just wrong." Drilling supporters say they are within one vote of getting the Senate to approve drilling. But The Anchorage Daily News discovers that those reportedly "on the fence" are inclined to vote no.
